| CEDA TRUST IN TSUNAMI RESPONSE PROGRAMMES WITH THE SUPPORT FROM Plan International |
| The tsunami that struck the nations across the world on 26.12.2004 could not be considered as mere a disaster that happens naturally elsewhere on the globe. Because, the death toll and the ravages it created were immense that there are people who are struggling to get relieved from the trauma still. That was why CEDA TRUST flung in to relief and rehabilitation works at once the news of tsunami broke out. |
Relief works undertaken: CEDA TRUST, based in Dindigul district of Tamil Nadu, has been functioning among the downtrodden masses, children, women, tribal people and environmentally affected people for their rights over their livelihood resources and development alternative. |
| On hearing the catastrophe, CEDA TRUST collected edibles and food materials, blankets and clothes fit for the people of different age groups, women and adolescent girls in particular, took them to Nagappattinam and Karaikal and distributed via SNEHA, an NGO which has been working among fishermen communities in these areas and also through VRDP. The volunteers of CEDA TRUST gave counseling to the wards and kins of the diceased and to those who had lost their assets in tsunami. |
| Besides killing people and livestock and devastating the agricultural fields, the killer wave has left thousands of people homeless in the territory of Karaikal district of Puduchery union territory. Therefore their plight in the aftermath of tsunami became worse for the winter season prolonged. Many of the people were on the way out of their native villages, seeking livelihood and shelter. In order to address the immediate need of the affected people, the house, CEDA TRUST started building temporary shelters with thatched roofs to the homeless in Keelavanjore with the support of CORDAID. CEDA TRUST built 48 temporary shelters in this way in the village and people are living in these shelters till date. |
